Following the lead of rival labels Sony and Avex, Universal Music Japan is boosting its presence in the artist-management side of the music business by signing an exclusive management contract with producer/songwriter Jeff Miyahara.
UM360, the Tokyo-based label’s wholly owned artist management company, announced the deal on Aug. 18, saying it is aimed at expanding Miyahara’s business opportunities and broadening his international presence.
Los Angeles native Miyahara has recently become one of Japan’s most successful producers, first making a name for himself with Kiminosubeteni, which he produced for Japanese hip-hop/reggae group Spontania and female vocalist Juju. Universal says it sold over 3.5 million digital downloads.
Other hit tracks Miyahara has since produced for Universal Music Japan include Sunaoninaretara by Juju featuring Spontania, Ashitagakurunara by Juju featuring male vocalist Jay’ed, and Sad to Say by female vocalist Jasmine.
Miyahara has also recently started working with U.S. artists such as Speech, Timbaland and Boyz II Men.
“We are thrilled to be working with Jeff Miyahara, who has quickly become one of the country’s most successful producers and songwriters,” said UM360 president Atsushi Suzuki in a statement. “UM360 is committed to developing the careers of the world’s most exciting artists, and we are looking forward to a long and productive relationship with this unique and exciting talent.”
