Niwango/Dwango pact with JASRAC for international music
Friday, April 30, 2010
Niwango, Japan's second-largest online video portal after YouTube, and parent company Dwango have reached an agreement with Japanese authors’ society JASRAC regarding the use of JASRAC-managed international repertoire.
The deal covers the use of non-Japanese material on Niwango’s “Nico Nico Douga” and “Smilevideo” video-sharing sites and is mainly designed to facilitate uploading of user-created videos in which users sing and perform JASRAC-managed foreign songs.
The actual signing date for the contract has yet to be announced.
The existing rights contract signed between Dwango/Niwango and JASRAC in April 2008 covers only Japanese music.
