Morita named SMEJ chairman
Thursday, June 18, 2009
Masao Morita, son of Sony co-founder Akio Morita, will be named chairman of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) and representative director of Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) effective June 24, SMEJ has announced.
Industry sources say Morita’s job will be to more effectively integrate Sony’s hardware and software operations, as the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment giant tries to recover from its 98.9-billion-yen ($1 billion) loss in the year ending March 31, 2009 – Sony’s first net loss in 14 years.
Morita is currently a member of the SMEJ board of directors. He was named SMEJ CEO in April 2003, but in 2004 relinquished that post to work as the head of parent company Sony Corp.’s brand and creative center.
