Asian music-business veteran Sandy Monteiro has been named Universal Music Group (UMG) president, Southeast Asia, effective July 1.
Monteiro, who for the past three years has served as UMG’s senior VP, Southeast Asia, replaces Max Hole, who becomes UMG International CEO the same day. Reporting to London-based Hole, Monteiro will continue to be based in Singapore.
Monteiro has been in charge of Universal Music’s operations across the region, including its digital activities. He will continue to carry out these duties in his new post, while adding responsibility for UMGI’s regional functions in Hong Kong.
“First and foremost, Sandy is a music man,” said Hole in a statement. “Among many achievements, he has successfully spearheaded a strategic push to rebuild our domestic repertoire business in a number of markets, while at the same time he and his team have set industry standards in the digital music sector. This promotion recognizes his determination and his vision.”
Commented Monteiro in a statement: “These are exciting times for the music business, and Universal Music is leading the way to a new future. We have both great artists on our roster and excellent people on our staff. I look forward to working with these teams across Southeast Asia to grow and redefine our business in the region as never before.”
Monteiro previously held posts at Warner Music, MCA and Soundbuzz, as well as serving as chairman of the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia from 2004 until this year.
